The single most common complaint in AI box reviews is not lag or overheating. It is "this does not work with my car." Most of the time that is not the product's fault. It is a compatibility issue that could have been avoided with five minutes of research before buying.

The basic requirement, wired CarPlay or Android Auto

A CarPlay AI box works by pretending to be your phone. Your car needs to support wired CarPlay or wired Android Auto for this to work. That is the only requirement but it is non-negotiable.

✓ Compatible

Your car has factory wired CarPlay or wired Android Auto and you currently plug your phone in with a cable to use it. Most cars from 2016 onwards with CarPlay will work.

✗ Not compatible

Your car has wireless CarPlay only with no wired option. BMW iDrive 8 systems, some Tesla integrations, and certain newer models with wireless-only setups will not work with current AI boxes.

⚠ Check before buying

Your car has a USB port but you are not sure if it supports CarPlay. Check your car's settings menu. CarPlay should appear as an option when you plug your phone in. If it does, an AI box will work.

Cars that are known not to work

BMW — most recent BMW models use a proprietary system that is not compatible with current AI boxes. This is one of the most common return reasons. If you drive a BMW, check your specific model carefully before buying.

Tesla — Tesla does not use CarPlay or Android Auto at all. No AI box will work with a Tesla.

Wireless-only CarPlay cars — some newer cars have moved to wireless CarPlay only with no wired port. Without a wired connection point, the AI box has nothing to plug into.

The touchscreen question

Most AI boxes require a touchscreen to navigate the Android interface. If your car uses a rotary knob or physical buttons instead of a touchscreen, you will not be able to control the AI box without an additional remote control.

This is less of an issue than it used to be. Some boxes now include a wireless remote specifically for non-touchscreen cars. The NEXVU-S includes a remote in the box, which is one of the reasons it works in a wider range of cars than most competitors.

Will it void my car warranty?

No. An AI box plugs into an existing USB port and does not modify anything in your car. Your car's factory software is completely untouched. Unplug it and your car goes back to exactly how it was. No dealer would ever know it had been used.

How to check your car

Plug your iPhone into your car with a USB cable. If a CarPlay screen appears, an AI box will work with your car. If nothing happens or only charging occurs, your car likely does not support CarPlay and an AI box will not work.
